Herrmann, Wilhelm

Wilhelm Herrmann (1846-1922) firmly allied himself with A. Ritschl, especially while teaching at Marburg. He was concerned for the possibility of faith in the modern scientific world, but argued more radically than Ritschl for the exclusion of metaphysics from theology. He believed that doctrine cannot bring religious certainty about God. The certainty of faith comes from a different source than either doctrine or historical evidence. Rather, the path of trust and truthfulness brings immediate communion with God. He argued that “a communion of the soul with the living God [comes] through the mediation of Christ” (The Communion of the Christian with God [London, 1906], 9). His emphasis on immediacy and consciousness derives ultimately from Schleiermacher, and his notion of faith as its own ground leads to Bultmann. He claims, as did Bultmann, to stand in the tradition of Luther. But such a notion of faith is contested head-on by W. Pannenberg.
